Plumbers & Pipefitters

 

A plumber/pipe fitter installs, maintains, repairs and tests many different types of pipe systems.  

These skilled workers install pipe systems that carry water, waste drainage, steam, air, or other liquids or gases needed for sanitation, industrial production, medical or other uses.  They also alter or repair existing pipe systems and install plumbing fixtures, appliances and heating and refrigeration units.  

 

Work may be indoor or outdoor in all weather; in high places or in trenches.  Plumbers and pipe fitters require physical stamina because of frequent heavy lifting and being on one's feet for long periods of time.

 

You must:

Be at least 17 years of age

Possess a High School diploma or GED Certificate

Have an official high school transcript

Complete a trade related aptitude test

Have a valid Ohio driver's license

How do I prepare for the trade?

The following will be helpful to have completed courses in or possess the following skills:

Good reading ability

General math, algebra, geometry

General science, chemistry and physics

Blueprint reading and mechanical drawing

Welding, metal and machine shop

Good work ethics

Good attendance

 

What are the program specifics?

Length of the program is 5 years

Probationary period is 1 year

Minimum of 168 hours of classroom-related training each year

Minimum of 9000 hours of on-the-job training - 5 years

Starting pay is 40% of journeyman wage

Health insurance, pension and annuity

Applications for apprenticeship will be accepted the Second Monday of each month from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. (except for the months of August and December)
